Practice being happy. I like that. I think so many people don't realize that happiness is not something that just happens, like the flu or being abducted by aliens.
You have to put some effort into to it at times. I like the Hesse quote. I also like Abe Lincoln's take on the matter: "A man is about as happy as he makes up his mind to be."
I like this one too (and I'll quit): Happiness is an inside job.
Excellent additions from Abe and Inside Job! ;-) Thanks for following, and thanks for commenting. That's what this blog is for: conversations.
I had heard the Abe quote but forgotten it. Thanks for reminding me.
In contemplating happiness yesterday, a line from our U.S. Declaration of Independence came to mind: "...that [we] are endowed by [our] Creator with...unalienable Rights...among these...the pursuit of Happiness."
I was thinking this may be the very root of our free society's puzzling discontent: that we pursue happiness (as an object) rather than develop and practice it as a talent.
